Zahra’s Story

When Zahra first joined The Teenage Market, she was looking for a way to showcase her handmade jewellery. What she found was a unique experience that helped her develop confidence, hone essential business skills, and create lasting connections within her creative community.

Before participating in The Teenage Market, Zahra described herself as “awkward” and uncertain in social situations. Having never sold her products in person before, the thought of interacting with customers was daunting. “It was definitely scary because I’ve never had to talk to so many people in person about my own products,” she admits.

Over the course of three days trading at The Teenage Market in Rotherham, Zahra found herself stepping out of her comfort zone, “talking to people gave me a better understanding of what I make and who I’m making it for.” she said. Zahra’s time at The Teenage Market also equipped her with practical skills that she hadn’t encountered before. From setting up a card reader to managing transactions and giving change, she learned the basics of how to run a small business.

Taking part helped me test the waters and to really get out there. It was my first experience in a formal retail setting and I felt professional and in control, which was so empowering

This sense of professionalism gave her the confidence to continue growing her jewellery business, which led to her participation in the Women of the World Festival in Manchester, where she reached an even wider audience. Like many young entrepreneurs, Zahra faced challenges when she started her journey. “I was struggling to get myself out there,” she explains. “I didn’t know how to ship products, make a website, or find my audience.”

The Teenage Market provided her with the perfect platform to overcome these barriers. “I instinctively knew that my audience was there,” Zahra says. The experience helped her promote her jewellery, gain valuable customer feedback, and build the foundation of her business.

Inspired by her time with The Teenage Market, Zahra has now set up an online shop to reach more customers. “I’m still a beginner, even after two years in the scene,” she admits, “but I’m determined to keep improving.”

Zahra’s story is a testament to her creative talents and entrepreneurial drive. The Teenage Market provided her with the opportunity to build up her confidence, gain practical skills and create lasting connections. She is eager to continue participating in The Teenage Market and hopes to see even more of her peers get involved.

“Whenever I get the chance, I would love to be at The Teenage Market every single year,” she says.
