Andi’s Story
When Andi moved to the UK from South Africa in 2022, she was unsure of what to expect. Engaging with The Teenage Market helped provide her with the confidence needed to pursue her passion for crochet and develop a strong sense of belonging and purpose in her new home.
Andi Littlejohn’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and discovery. Born and raised in South Africa, Andi’s early years were shaped by economic instability and high levels of crime. “Growing up, we lived behind high walls topped with spikes and electric fences. It was a constant state of fear,” she shared.
During lockdown, she found comfort and purpose in knitting blankets for homeless people, which helped channel her anxiety into helping others in need. Shortly after, Andi and her family made the difficult decision to leave South Africa and move to the UK, seeking a safer, more stable life.
“It wasn’t just about opportunity—it was about survival,” she explained. Adjusting to a new culture, environment, and currency was challenging, but Andi’s creative spark has helped ease the transition to a new country.
Shortly after making the move to the UK, Andi crocheted herfirst small animal—a tiny chicken for her sister. This simple act set off a chain reaction of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.
Her talent did not go unnoticed, and soon after friends and classmates began requesting custom-made pieces. By 2024, her passion for crochet had grown, but Andi felt daunted by the idea of joining traditional markets.
“The fees and the professional setups were intimidating. I wasn’t sure I belonged, ” she admitted. Then, everything changed when her mother spotted a Facebook post about The Teenage Market. “It was exactly what I was looking for: a free platform to showcase my work without the financial pressure. It gave me the confidence to take that first step”, she said.
Andi’s first Teenage Market event in Bootle in June 2024 was a revelation. “I nearly sold out on my first day and I felt so validated seeing people appreciated my work,” she said. The market was so successful that she decided to extend her attendance to trading at the event across two days.
Since then, Andi has participated in several markets, each bringing new opportunities for growth. At one market she made the equivalent of her full month’s retail job salary in just one day.
“The Teenage Market has given me so much more than financial gain. It’s taught me about product placement, customer engagement, and even about how to handle money confidently in a different currency.”
Andi’s involvement with the events have also massively helped her overcome deep-seated social anxieties. “Before, I found social interaction intimidating. Now, I can start conversations with anyone—whether it’s customers or fellow traders. The market environment is so welcoming that it feels natural to connect.”
One of the most transformative aspects of her involvement in The Teenage Market events for Andi has been the sense of belonging it has created, “Coming from a place where community often felt out of reach, the market has become my safe space. It’s not just about selling—it’s about meeting amazing people, sharing stories, and growing together.”
Andi has even formed meaningful connections with other traders and even their families, “At the Earlestown Market, I was able to reconnect with a market neighbour from Rochdale, and now my dad is best friends with her dad!” she laughed.
Reflecting on her journey, Andi credits The Teenage Market as a turning point in her life. “It’s not just a market; it’s a lifeline. Without it, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to grow my crochet business or push myself creatively. In South Africa, this kind of opportunity simply doesn’t exist. It’s changed my life,” she shared.
While Andi is currently studying biomedical science at university, she continues to balance her studies with her creative pursuits. Crochet remains her passion, and she dreams of one day teaching others the skills that have brought her so much joy and fulfilment.
Andi’s story is a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of The Teenage Market. By providing an accessible, supportive environment, the initiative has empowered Andi to embrace her creativity, build her confidence, and find a sense of purpose in her new home.
To young people considering the market, Andi offers this advice: “Don’t hold back. Even if you’re unsure, give it a go. The Teenage Market is more than a place to sell—it’s a place to grow your confidence, connect with other like-minded young people and realise your potential.”
